To mark this autumn’s London Design Festival, Faye Toogood has invited 50 of the leading creative forces in the country – drawn from a wide range of disciplines, from furniture design to art and photography – to take part in a unique collaborative project. The principle behind The Trade Show is a simple one: Toogood presents each of the participants with one of her signature Spade chairs (created for this project in a special limited-edition sandcast-aluminium), and in return they donate a representative piece of their own work. These pieces form the core of a special exhibition at the Garage gallery in South Kensington – the selfsame location where Toogood launched her debut furniture collection in 2010. Also on display will a series of documents that detail the interactions of the various designers with their Spade chairs. The Trade Show draws on the centuries-old tradition of artists supporting each other through mutually beneficial barter – and the result is a celebration of the habit of collection, an auto-curated Wunderkammer that showcases pieces from some of the most exciting talents in contemporary British art and design.
